LUX South Ari Atoll, Maldives

Most Maldivian islands are no more than the size of a postage stamp, a sandy speck floating in the bold blue of the Indian Ocean. LUX* South Ari Atoll is located on Dhidhoofinolhu, which at 2km long and 200m wide is one of the largest islands in the Maldives. They've certainly made this extra space count, keeping the 4km-long beach beautifully pristine and offering one of the most comprehensive dining offerings in the Maldives – eight restaurants and five bars, to be exact. It's an island perfect for couples or families who want that extra bit of room to explore (it takes an hour to wander around the island's entirety, much of it through manicured tropical gardens) or just a secluded sandy corner to discover and enjoy by themselves.

Beyond the beach lies countless marine meccas waiting to be explored. LUX* South Ari Atoll is one of the best places in the Maldives for diving and no less than 50 dive sites lie within an hour's dhoni ride away, each one promising rainbow-hued reefs and a rich array of marine life. Manta rays and whale sharks are the big draw here, especially as the resort is one of the few locations where you can witness the latter year-round, and a diving excursion with either is one of the most unforgettable things to do in the Maldives.

In the rare case you do find yourself missing home, you might stumble across a vintage red telephone box standing in the shade of a palm tree. One call home (international calls can be made at no extra cost) will only make you realise how special LUX* South Ari Atoll really is.

Highlights

Sleep

The accommodation at LUX* South Ari Atoll combines elegance with traditional Maldivian style. Whether you're on the beach or staying overwater, each villa and pavilion is beautifully beach chic, topped with a thatched roof and is angled towards sunrise or sunset so you can start or end your day right.

Inside, the whitewashed walls create a light, airy and relaxing atmosphere, while the turquoise and orange cushions and day beds on the outside terrace add bursts of bright colour. The beach pavilions and villas come with a terrace which looks onto the cashmere-soft beach and the surrounding foliage makes it feel like you have your own private strip of sand. The indoor-outdoor bathrooms all come with their own standalone tub and outdoor showers. Larger beach pavilions are perfect for families, with the Family Lagoon Pavilions sleeping up to six people.

When it comes to the overwater villas, all have standalone baths overlooking the glittering Indian Ocean and steps leading straight into the gin-clear lagoon below. Each have floating egg chairs and day beds for added relaxation and some have their own private pools.
