An Adventure through Mauritius
This carefully crafted 12 day journey through Mauritius blends boutique hideaways, vibrant coastal living, and iconic island luxury. Begin in the tranquil hills of Chamarel, where lush forests and quiet trails ease you gently into island life. Continue north to the lively shores of Grand Baie, pairing chic beachfront living with local flavour and adventure. Conclude on the serene east coast at the legendary Shangri La Le Touessrok, where private islands, turquoise lagoons, and effortless elegance create the perfect finale. Throughout, you’ll experience the island’s diverse landscapes, warm hospitality, and a seamless balance of relaxation and exploration.
Your Journey
Days 1–3:
Arrive into Mauritius and begin your journey at Lakaz Chamarel, a boutique eco retreat tucked away in the lush hills of Chamarel. This charming hideaway is one of the island’s true gems - peaceful, intimate, and the perfect place to ease into island life.
Spend your days unwinding in your private pool villa or exploring the region’s magnificent hiking trails, many of which begin right from your doorstep. For those keen to venture further, bicycles can be arranged for a leisurely ride into the nearby village, or you may choose to visit the iconic Chamarel Waterfall or stop by the local distillery for a spot of rum tasting.
A highlight of your stay is a sunset horse riding experience in the wild south of the island at the Centre Équestre de Riambel. Here you’ll enjoy an unforgettable ride along an almost deserted stretch of coastline, complete with wine and cheese as the sun dips below the horizon.
Accommodation - 3 Nights
Days 4–6: LUX* Grand Baie
Leave the quiet beauty of the Chamarel Mountains behind and travel north by private car to Grand Baie, with a memorable stop at the 7 Cascades - Tamarind Falls en route. Here, an immersive half day trek follows the course of the Tamarind River, leading you past seven striking waterfalls framed by tropical forest. Along the way, you’ll have the chance to cool off in crystal clear natural pools at the base of the falls - a refreshing pause in one of Mauritius’ most scenic landscapes.
Your next three nights are spent at LUX* Grand Baie, a contemporary beachfront retreat with an effortlessly chic, beach club energy. Days unfold between the calm, swimmable lagoon, the resort’s stylish rooftop and pool scene, and the soothing sanctuary of the spa. Whether you’re unwinding to the soundtrack of a poolside DJ or simply soaking up the sun on the powder soft beach, the atmosphere is vibrant yet relaxed.
Grand Baie itself is a lively hub, and we encourage you to wander out and sample the town’s excellent local restaurant scene, all within easy walking distance of the hotel. A short drive away lies the charming fishing village of Cap Malheureux, famed for its postcard perfect Red Roof Church and delicious seaside barbecues, offering visitors a lovely glimpse into everyday island life.
Accommodation - 3 Nights
Days 7–12: Shangri La Le Touessrok
For your final stay in Mauritius, travel by private car to the island’s serene east coast, where the iconic Shangri La Le Touessrok awaits. This legendary resort is celebrated for its contemporary, haute chic design and effortless sense of elegance. From the moment you arrive and look out towards Trou d’Eau Douce Bay, you’ll feel the magnetic charm of a place that draws guests back time and again.
Your days here unfold at a gentle pace, with the added delight of the resort’s two nearby islands just a short boat ride away. On Île aux Cerfs, golfers can take on the spectacular 18 hole championship course designed by Bernhard Langer, while adventure seekers enjoy a full array of watersports from The Boathouse and Dive Centre. Meanwhile, Ilot Mangénie — the resort’s exclusive castaway retreat offers a blissfully secluded escape. It’s the perfect spot for long, lazy afternoons, barefoot beach lunches, and fresh seafood or wood fired pizzas served under the shade of casuarina trees.

"Mauritius was made first, and then heaven; and that heaven was copied after Mauritius."
Mark Twain, in his 1897 travelogue
The capital of Mauritius is Port Louis. Located on the island's north-west coastline, Port Louis was originally settled by the Dutch in the 17th century, who imaginatively named it Noordt Wester Haven (North West Harbour). However, after the French arrived, in 1736 the governor Bertrand François Mahé de Labourdonnais took the initiative to develop it into the island's commercial hub and capital. He renamed it in honour of the French king at the time, Louis XV. Over the years, Port Louis has remarkably survived a slew a natural disasters, including fires, plagues and tropical storms.
Today, the capital is a fascinating melting pot of cultures. The centre comprises colonial buildings which stand as legacies of past Dutch and French occupation, characterful Chinese and Indian neighbourhoods and the buzzing Central Market.
The main island of Mauritius is around 1,865 sq km, which is around the same size as the county of Buckinghamshire (1,874 sq km) – Turquoise's home! There are over 330km of beaches lacing the island's fringes and, if the traffic was kind, you could drive across the entire island from top to toe in around two hours. Mauritius' compact size means it's perfect for hiring a car yourself and exploring at your own leisure – something we highly recommend!
Strangely, Mauritius doesn't actually have an official language! Thanks to its colonial history, both English and French are widely spoken across the island. However, Mauritian Creole is seen as the native language and is spoken by most locals.
The currency is the Mauritian rupee, although Euros, dollars and credit cards are all widely accepted.
The time difference is GMT +4 hours.
British passport holders don’t need a visa to visit Mauritius.
No vaccinations are currently recommended for Mauritius. If you’re entering Mauritius from a Yellow Fever zone, possession of a valid Yellow Fever inoculation certificate is required. For any current travel health advice, you should seek guidance from your GP at least four to six weeks prior to travel.
The direct flight time from London to Mauritius is 12 hours.
Mauritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean. Its location is very remote, lying to the east of Madagascar and its nearest neighbour is the island of Réunion, around 220km away to the south-west.
