On the Water
El Nido’s lagoons are among Palawan’s most spectacular sights, where clear water sits between dramatic limestone walls. A kayak gives you the freedom to explore close up, paddling beneath the cliffs and into sheltered corners that larger boats cannot reach. Big Lagoon on Miniloc Island is a particular highlight, its narrow entrance opening onto an extraordinary expanse of turquoise water surrounded by rock formations and greenery. Take your time to absorb the scenery, watching the colours change as you move between sunshine and shade. It’s a memorable way to experience the landscapes that make Palawan so special.
Underground River
Near Puerto Princesa, Palawan’s scenery takes a fascinating turn at the UNESCO-listed Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park. Here, a river runs beneath the forest through an immense limestone cave system before reaching the sea. Board a small paddleboat for a guided journey into the darkness, where torchlight reveals stalactites, stalagmites and cavernous chambers carved by water over thousands of years. The surrounding national park protects forest and wildlife, making the setting part of the experience too. For those including Puerto Princesa in their itinerary, this is a remarkable contrast to the beaches and lagoons further north.
