Angkor Wat

Siem Reap, Cambodia

Siem Reap is the gateway to Angkor, where the extraordinary achievements of the Khmer Empire survive in vast stone temples, intricate carvings and towers entwined with jungle roots. Spread across more than 400 square kilometres, this remarkable archaeological landscape deserves several days of discovery.

Beyond the temples, Siem Reap offers Khmer craft boutiques, lively markets and excellent places to eat, with peaceful hotels providing a welcome retreat after exploring. Nearby, Tonle Sap Lake and the surrounding countryside reveal another side of Cambodia, best discovered by boat or bicycle.

Temples & history

Angkor Wat is the great landmark, a vast religious monument whose distinctive towers feature on Cambodia’s flag. Explore its galleries and detailed bas-reliefs with a knowledgeable guide, discovering Hindu mythology, including stories from the Ramayana, and the site’s later Buddhist traditions.

Within the walled city of Angkor Thom, the Bayon’s immense carved faces are another unforgettable sight, as are the monumental entrance gates. At Ta Prohm, enormous tree roots wrap around walls and spill through the ruins, revealing the extraordinary meeting of architecture and nature.

A good guide makes all the difference at Angkor, bringing its carvings, beliefs and history to life while planning a route around your interests. We recommend exploring in the early morning and later afternoon, returning to your hotel during the midday heat. Spreading visits over several days allows time for the major temples, lesser-known sites and a little relaxation in between.

Explore, dream, discover and embrace ...

"Don't try to see beyond the horizon - often the richest experiences are those that you stumble upon because of where you are and who you're with. Explore, dream, discover and embrace each new experience as a life-changing memory."
