Koh Kood & Koh Mak

Koh Kood or Koh Kut is a relatively large island in the east of the Gulf of Thailand close to Cambodia. Despite its size Koh Kood is wonderfully undeveloped compared with well know islands like Koh Samui and Phuket and has pristine deserted beaches and an interior still covered by thick rainforest offering a natural island escape.

Neighbouring island, Koh Mak is tiny in comparison (just 16 square kilometers), with quite a different feel to it. It is less mountainous making it much easier to explore by bike or scooter and with very few cars it is very safe. Much of the island is covered in palm and rubber tree plantation with a scattering of local restaurants, simple accommodation and deserted ‘secret’ beaches. With a laid-back vibe, this is the island for those seeking an off-the-beaten track, quiet hideaway, a stark contrast to the many busy beach resorts in other areas of the country.

Best time to visit Koh Kood & Koh Mak

November to April is a lovely time to enjoy Koh Kood and Koh Mak, with sunshine and generally calmer seas for lazy beach days and exploring by kayak. We particularly love December to February for comfortable warmth. From May to October, rain becomes more frequent and boat trips depend a little more on the weather.

Beaches & Island Life

Quiet bays and palm-lined shores make Koh Kood and Koh Mak lovely islands to explore beyond your hotel. On small, relatively flat Koh Mak, hire a bicycle and follow quiet lanes past coconut groves and rubber plantations, stopping for beachside lunches and swims along the way. Koh Kood offers a greener adventure: kayak along the mangrove-lined Klong Chao waterway or follow a forest path to Klong Chao Waterfall, where you can enjoy a freshwater swim when conditions allow. Both islands reward a little exploring, with local cafés and sandy shores providing plenty of reasons to linger.
