SALT of Palmar styles itself as the ‘Big-Hearted Boutique Hotel’ and, we confess, this hotel has definitely stolen a piece of ours. This new adults only hotel is the first of (we hope) many sustainable and eco-conscious hotels in Mauritius and these guys don’t just talk the talk, they walk the walk too! The hotel is completely free of single-use plastics and everything, where possible, is locally sourced – from the furniture, to the food, and even their bathroom amenities that are produced on-island and packaged in bamboo and limestone paper, rather than plastic.

The 59 rooms come with beach, pool or garden views and the design of each is inspired by the island itself. Think turquoise seas, vibrant blue skies, green fields of sugar – they have created a stunning, unmistakably Mauritian, hotel using (of course) locally made fabrics and furniture. Our favourite room has got to be Bang On Beach and not just for its cool name – drifting off to the soothing sound of waves lapping the shore is pretty awesome, too.
